Trail cameras are the one hunting category where the budget end has genuinely caught up. Ten years ago a cheap camera meant slow triggers, visible flash and a card full of pictures of grass. Today the manufacturing is mature, the sensors are commoditized, and a sub-$100 camera can publish numbers that a premium camera published five years ago.

The A50 is the clearest example, and it is our top pick in the cheap trail camera roundup because of two specifications: a stated 0.1-second trigger and 100 feet of no-glow infrared. Both are numbers that matter, and both are worth understanding rather than accepting.

This review explains what those figures do in practice, what the camera is not, and the single most important thing about buying a trail camera for public land — which is not a specification at all.

Trigger speed: the spec that decides everything

Trigger speed is the delay between the passive infrared sensor detecting a warm body and the shutter firing. GardePro states 0.1 seconds. To understand why that number is the whole review, work through what happens on a trail.

A deer walking a trail at a normal pace covers roughly four to six feet per second. A camera aimed straight across that trail has a detection zone perhaps eight to ten feet wide at typical distances.

At a 0.1-second trigger, the deer moves less than a foot between detection and exposure. It is in the frame, roughly where it was detected.

At a 0.5-second trigger — which is not unusual on cheaper cameras — the deer moves two to three feet. Often still in frame, often only the back half.

At a 1-second trigger, the deer has moved four to six feet and has frequently left the frame entirely. You get a picture of an empty trail with a leg edge in it, and the camera has told you a deer existed without telling you anything about it.

That is why trigger speed outranks resolution, video quality and everything else on the spec sheet. A blurry photo of a buck is information. A crisp photo of the space where a buck was is not.

No-glow infrared, and why the flash type matters

Trail cameras take night photos using infrared illumination, and there are three approaches, which trade image quality against visibility.

  • White flash. An actual visible flash. Best image quality by a distance, color at night, and it lights up the woods like a camera flash because that is what it is.
  • Low-glow infrared. Emitters that produce a dim red glow visible to anything looking at them. Good image quality and cheaper to build.
  • No-glow (black flash) infrared. Emitters at a longer wavelength that produce essentially no visible light. Grainier night images because there is less usable illumination, and nothing to see.

The A50 uses no-glow, and on public land that is the specification that matters most — for a reason that has nothing to do with deer. Deer do notice a red glow and some individuals avoid it, though the evidence is mixed and many deer ignore it entirely. Other hunters notice a red glow every single time.

A visible camera on public land tells anyone walking past that somebody thinks this spot is worth watching, which is the most useful piece of scouting information you could hand a competitor. It also makes the camera worth stealing. No-glow is a theft-prevention and spot-protection feature far more than a deer feature, and on public ground it is close to non-negotiable.

100 feet of night detection, in context

GardePro states 100 feet of no-glow night vision. That is a genuinely useful figure and it is worth being precise about what it means.

Detection range and illumination range are different things. The passive infrared sensor can detect a warm body further out than the infrared emitters can usefully light it. A camera can trigger on a deer at eighty feet and produce a photo of a dark shape, because the emitters ran out of reach.

The practical consequence: do not set this camera up to watch a field at 100 feet and expect usable night images at that distance. Set it at twenty-five to forty feet on a trail, where the illumination is strong, the deer fills a useful share of the frame, and the trigger zone matches the trail. 4K video: nice, and mostly not the point

GardePro states true 4K video, which is unusual at this price and genuinely useful for one thing: watching how a deer moves through a spot rather than seeing that it was there.

The honest caveats. Video eats battery and card space at a rate photographs do not, and a camera set to long 4K clips will run down a set of batteries in a fraction of the time. Video also takes far longer to review, which matters when you have a card with two thousand files on it.

Our practical setting for a scouting camera is photo mode with a multi-shot burst, and video reserved for a specific question — which direction do deer enter this field, is this the same buck, what time does the pattern break. Use the capability deliberately rather than as a default.

What this camera will not do

1. It is not cellular

No cell, no WiFi. To see what is on it you walk in, pull the card, and walk out — leaving scent, making noise, and pressuring the exact spot you were trying to learn about.

This is the single strongest argument for a cellular camera and it is a real one. A cellular camera lets you watch a spot without ever going near it, which on a pressured public-land parcel is worth genuine money. What it costs is the camera price plus a monthly data plan, and for a budget hunter the plan is often the bigger number over a season. The budget mitigation: check cards on a schedule that matches the hunting, not your curiosity. Once every two or three weeks, in the middle of the day, with the wind wrong for the deer and right for you, treating it as a scouting trip rather than a card pull.

2. There is no warranty counter

GardePro is an online-first brand. If the camera fails outside the return window, there is no local dealer and no service department to walk into. The thing that matters more than the camera: check the rules

Before you buy a trail camera for public land, find out whether you can legally use one there. This has changed rapidly and it catches hunters out.

Delaware banned trail cameras for recreational use on state wildlife areas, state forests and state parks in 2023, citing camera proliferation, hunters effectively claiming exclusive use of areas where their cameras sat, vegetation being cut to clear camera views, and privacy complaints about cameras monitoring parking areas and trails. Other states have introduced their own restrictions, several targeting cellular cameras specifically during big-game seasons, and more have been proposed.

The rules differ by state, by land-management agency, by camera type and sometimes by time of year. Check with the agency that manages the ground you hunt, this season, before you hang anything.

Batteries, cards and the setup that actually matters

Two cheap decisions do more for camera reliability than the camera choice does.

Lithium batteries, not alkaline, if you are running through a cold season. Alkaline cells lose voltage sharply in the cold and a camera reports a dead battery when the cells still have capacity at room temperature. Lithium holds voltage far better in cold, and the cost difference over a season is smaller than one wasted card pull.

A card size you will actually review. A very large card fills with thousands of files you never look through. A modest card forces discipline and, more importantly, forces you to fix a camera that is triggering on grass rather than letting it fill up unnoticed.

The verdict

The A50 publishes the numbers that matter at a price where they did not used to be available, and its weaknesses are honest ones: no cellular, no service counter. For a budget hunter scouting public land, the no-glow emitters and the fast trigger are exactly the right two things to have prioritized.
